The Orphaned Youth: Bringing hope to vulnerable youth in South Sudan
At RMC Ministries, we believe that children are a precious gift from God, possessing immense value and human dignity. Yet, across South Sudan and neighboring refugee camps, thousands of children and young people are growing up without the safety, love, and protection of a family. Through our work with orphaned and vulnerable youth, RMC Ministries provides safe shelter, physical care, spiritual mentorship, education, and mental health support. Our goal is to give young people affected by conflict and displacement a safe environment where they can grow and build a future rooted in faith and opportunity.
The challenge
Decades of civil conflict have left deep, painful scars on the youngest generation of South Sudanese. In remote villages and crowded refugee camps, countless children have been orphaned, separated from their families, or left entirely without support. Without protectors, these young youth face extreme and immediate dangers.
Young boys face the risk of being forced into armed conflict. For young girls, the cultural practice of selling young brides means they are frequently sold into forced marriages by families seeking dowries. These experiences leave many young people between the ages of 10 and 30 facing trauma, anxiety related to war and displacement, and a lack of stable family support.
What we are doing
We believe that no child should have to face fear and isolation alone. RMC Ministries works to protect and support vulnerable young people through several areas of intervention:
Orphanage and community outreach: Every week, our teams visit local orphanages and remote villages to pray with children, share the Gospel, and provide food and basic physical necessities.
Providing a safe place: Through F.I.S.H. Academy, we provide safe boarding facilities and a loving Christian environment where both boys and girls can live and study, completely protected from forced marriage, exploitation, and violence.
Mobile crisis intervention: To address the urgent mental health needs of young refugees, our mobile intervention team responds directly to crisis situations. They provide immediate emotional support and transport vulnerable youth out of dangerous situations into safe environments.
Professional trauma counseling: We connect hurting young people with professional, faith-centered therapeutic counseling at F.I.S.H. Academy to help them process their grief and find emotional healing.
Impact
By the grace of God and the support of our partners, we are bringing real, lasting hope to children who once felt completely forgotten:
Support in refugee camps: Our daily radio broadcasts carry counseling, scripture, and messages of hope directly into remote villages and northern Uganda refugee camps like Pagirinya, Majii, and Boroli.
Crisis response: Our mobile intervention team is actively responding to the high number of mental health and trauma calls we receive from young people.
Safe boarding and education: We have provided safe shelter and full academic scholarships to hundreds of vulnerable girls, including many who traveled from the remote Nuba Mountain region, to protect them from child marriage and give them a bright future.
Ongoing care and encouragement: Through our weekly orphanage visits and hands-on care, we are helping children smile again, showing them that they are cherished and protected.
Why it matters
Every young person deserves to grow up in a safe environment where they can learn, play, and discover God’s purpose for their life. We refuse to let South Sudan’s youth be defined by the trauma of war, exploitation, or neglect.
By investing in orphaned and vulnerable youth, we are stopping the cycle of poverty and violence at its root. When we heal a child’s trauma and ground them in a quality Christian education, we are raising up future leaders who will rebuild South Sudan with character, peace, and faith.
How you can help
You can stand in the gap for a child who has no one else. Our safe spaces are currently filled to capacity, and we are working to expand our facilities. We are planning a new building project to provide additional therapy rooms and counseling spaces specifically designed to help young people heal from trauma.
Your financial partnership will help us feed orphaned children, fund critical mobile counseling services, and expand our dormitories to bring more vulnerable boys and girls into a safe, healing environment.
Please consider partnering with us today to bring hope, healing, and a future to the orphaned youth of South Sudan.
